What is a Business Operating System
A Business Operating System is a complete set of processes to organize a company. It begins with defining key foundational elements in a company such as one’s purpose, vision, core values and future plans. The operating system then provides a communication method and meeting structure to design projects to help you achieve your company’s goals.
Why are Operating Systems so difficult to implement in Dentistry?
The most common business operating systems were designed for traditionally run companies. These are companies who have a leadership team and a CEO who are dedicated full-time to growing and managing the company. Most dental practices are set up in a non-traditional manner where the CEO role is a part-time position due to the dentist also serving as a full-time producer in the clinic. Typically, all of the practice’s other employees are also tied to clinical production as an assistant, front desk administrator or a member of the new patient team. That leaves no one available for improving the company full-time during regular business hours. The clinical team specializes in patient care and usually lacks formal business training. With the lack of executive caliber employees, this leaves the full-time provider and business owner to handle new growth complexities after they leave the clinic for the day. Why is the Rising Tide Operating System different?
I believe that the dental industry needs a custom designed operating system to work in tandem with the reality of having a provider-led CEO, which is why I designed the Rising Tide Operating System (The System). Before implementing The System, we conduct a capacity analysis to determine how much administrative time is available for the provider and other team members. The System also performs an assessment of the Dentist’s CEO skill set and the business capabilities of the current team members. We then create a plan to implement solutions to maximize non-clinical administrative time for all team members and design a support plan to offset any lack of business acumen possessed by the team. The system is also designed to factor in industry seasonality.
Other operating systems are intended to organize your company but not actually provide you with solutions. Your team is expected to come up with the best answer to your challenges.
